Margherita: The Top Tier of Pizza

July 27, 2023

There’s no denying that pizza is one of, if not the most popular dishes. Served in a vast array of different methods, with an almost never-ending amount of toppings, it’s easily the most customizable food item in the world, and the variations that emerge seem to grow by leaps and bounds on a daily basis. The question is, what is the original combination? What was the blend that began it all and started the pizza on its upward trajectory in popularity and affection? Well, to answer that question, we need to travel all the way back to Italy in the late 1800s and its queen, Margherita di Savoia.

Margherita Pizza

The Margherita Pizza

The pizza that started it all, which is known as the Margherita, is composed of some very unique ingredients and is still served inside and outside of Italy to this very day. Its three main ingredients, tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil, are included to represent the three principal colors of the Italian flag (Red, white, and green.). Here at Russo’s New York Pizzeria, we adhere to the traditional Italian recipe to give our customers a truly authentic taste of the Pizza that started it all.

The Authentic Ingredients That Make the Difference

Unlike the typical cheese pizza that’s commonly found in most American pizza parlors, the Margarita is composed of a variety of ingredients to give it its authentic taste.

  • Dough: The traditional dough for a Margherita is homemade and wheat-based. It’s left to rise for two days, making it easily digestible.
  • Marinara Sauce: The sauce that gets used for a Magherita is rather simplistic and doesn't require a lot of extra ingredients. Tomatoes. olive oil and basil are enough to bring out a truly unique taste.
  • Mozzarella Cheese: Unlike the shredded varieties that many people use today, the mozzarella on a Margarita is served in the shape of discs. The result is a thick layer of cheese that melts in your mouth.
  • Basil Leaves: These are added right before the pizza is served and after it's cooked to retain their flavor and shade of green.
  • Garlic & Olive Oil: These ingredients are essential for any authentic Italian pizza, and they’re what makes the Margherita stand out from so many others.
