What is Halal? How does Russo’s offer Halal food at all our pizzerias? In case you’re unfamiliar with the concept, here’s a synopsis of how it works.
Halal is the Arabic word for “lawful.” So, when we refer to Halal foods, these are the ones Muslims may consume without violating the Quranic law. By contrast, there are several foods considered “Haram,” (or unlawful) according to Islamic law.
This is a brief list of Haram foods.
Even for non-carnivorous animals, there are certain slaughter requirements that one must meet in order for the meat to qualify as Halal. Poultry, for example, must be harvested by severing the carotid artery, and allowing the blood to drain from the chicken or turkey properly. Some meat factories even have an Islamic official supervising the process and praying over the meat.
Of course, the concept of Halal has a broader context beyond food preparation. Muslims also follow Quranic restrictions regarding other areas such as personal care products, cosmetics, and other consumer items. However, concerning food choices, all other items (not mentioned in the Quran) are fit for consumption, and therefore, Halal.
